Poker is one of those things that seem to makes its way into a lot of movies. It can be seen in many of the James Bond movies, nearly every western ever made, and it can even be spotted in some more contemporary movies. One of the reasons that poker stars is so heavily used in the movies is because it is a great way to create a certain feeling or tone. Another reason for the use of poker in a movie is it is one of the easiest excuses for several people to be sitting together in one spot having a conversation

While everyone knows that poker has been used as a plot device in several movies, fewer of us are aware that there are actually some really great movies that are about Poker.

Rounders

This is probably the most famous of all the poker movies. Rounders stars Matt Damon, himself a really excellent poker player. The plot of the movie is fairly simple; two close friends are trying to come up with enough money to pay a significant debt. The simplest and quickest way to come up with the needed cash is by playing poker. One of the little known facts about Rounders is that it has a guest cameo by the one and only Johnny Chan who is the only person to have ever won back to back World Series of Poker tournaments.

For many people, especially people who have never played poker, Rounders was there very first introduction to Texas Hold ‘em.

Maverick

Not only was this a great movie, it was also a really great television series. The series introduced the character of Brett Maverick, played by James Gardner, to the world. Maverick was a loveable, goofy guy who in addition to having a heart of gold was also a pretty incredible poker player. The movie Maverick starred Mel Gibson, in the title role. In this movie Maverick has to go through a series of mishaps so he can come up with the entry fee for a huge poker tournament Maverick is hampered by the stunning Jodie Foster, who plays a sugar sweet, dishonest Southern Belle, and a cranky old US Marshal, who is played by none other than James Gardner.

Honeymoon in Vegas

This movie features Nicholas Cage and Sarah Jessica Parker. When his mother is dying, Cage’s character, Jack Singer, promises to never wed. Years later he reneges on his promises and goes to Las Vegas to marry his girlfriend. While in Vegas, Singer gets pulled into a crooked poker game where he loses his money. The plot that follows involves bartering of companionship as repayment, second thoughts, and flying Elvis’.

A big Hand for a Little Lady

This particular PokerStars.it movie is an older western that features a woman playing in a poker game after her husband puts everything the family owns into the pot. Her husband has good intentions, but when he is sidelined with a heart attack, there is only one possible solution. Although trite, this is a cute little movie.
